Roanoke VA – Vinton Voice – Health officials in Roanoke say a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in the northwestern part of the city.
According to the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts, the rabid raccoon was discovered near Adams Street and Dakota Avenue early in March 2026. Officials are now reminding residents to take precautions to avoid potential exposure to the deadly virus.

Rabies is a serious disease that affects the nervous system and can be transmitted through bites or saliva from infected animals.
Health officials recommend the following steps to help prevent the spread of rabies:
• Avoid contact with wild animals or unfamiliar pets
• Report injured, sick, or aggressive animals to authorities
• Keep vaccinations current for dogs, cats, and ferrets
If a person is bitten or scratched by an animal, officials say to wash the wound immediately with soap and water and contact a doctor and the local health department.
If a pet may have been exposed to rabies, owners should contact their veterinarian and local animal control right away.
