A deadly confrontation outside a northwest Roanoke gas station has left one man dead and another facing second-degree murder charges, following what investigators describe as an exchange of gunfire in broad daylight.

According to Roanoke Police, the incident unfolded late in the morning on November 9, 2025, when officers were called to a shooting in the parking lot of a gas station on the 2500 block of Shenandoah Avenue NW. When officers arrived, they found 30-year-old Trayvon Crowder, of Roanoke, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, Crowder was pronounced dead at the scene.
A short time later, police located 28-year-old Marquis Wiley, also of Roanoke, several blocks away on Milton Street NW, suffering from what authorities described as non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. Wiley was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being taken into custody.
Investigators believe the deadly encounter was not random. The preliminary investigation indicates that Wiley fired the shots that killed Crowder, who returned fire, striking Wiley in the process.
Wiley has since been charged with second-degree murder and remains held at the Roanoke Adult Detention Center.
Detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to the shooting and are urging anyone who witnessed the altercation or has additional information to come forward. Tips can be shared anonymously by calling the Roanoke Police Department at 540-344-8500.
