UPDATE: VADOC Releases Name of Inmate Accused in Deadly Attack at River North Correctional Center

GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia Department of Corrections has released the name of the inmate accused of killing Corrections Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, 40, during an attack Monday at River North Correctional Center.

VADOC identified the suspect as John Holomon Russell, 32. Russell was serving an 11-year, 11-month active sentence. His record includes:

  • Carjacking – Fairfax County Circuit Court: 15-year sentence, with 8 years and 1 month suspended
  • Use of a firearm in commission of a felony – Fairfax County: 3 years
  • Shoplifting – Albemarle County: 4 years and 8 months, with 2 years and 8 months suspended

Two additional correctional officers injured in the attack were treated at a hospital and have since been released.

VADOC leadership emphasized that Officer Hall’s service and sacrifice will not be forgotten, and the agency is continuing to support the Hall family and staff at River North during this tragedy.

The department activated its Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team and is coordinating with LEAP, Mount Rogers Community Services, and Anthem EAP to provide immediate emotional and psychological support. VADOC’s Office of Human Resources is also assisting Hall’s family with survivor benefits and additional resources.

Personnel from multiple VADOC units across Virginia have been deployed to support the staff at River North Correctional Center as the investigation continues.
