After 37 Years, Roanoke’s Rail Yard Hobby Shop Announces Closing

ROANOKE, Va. — A Roanoke staple for model train collectors is preparing to close its doors after nearly four decades. The Rail Yard Hobby Shop, which has served the region’s hobbyists since 1988, will officially shut down on November 30—ending its run as the last hobby shop of its kind in the Roanoke Valley.

Owner Jim Molinary said the decision comes down to two things: it’s time to slow down, and there’s no buyer or successor ready to take over the business.

Molinary reflected on the shop’s long history, saying the work has been rewarding and the customers unforgettable. Over the years, he became not just a shop owner but a trusted resource for model train enthusiasts throughout the region.

Long-time customers have been stopping by after hearing the news, hoping to make one more purchase before the doors close for good. Many say the closure creates a real challenge for collectors who rely on seeing items in person before buying them.

Beyond the shopping experience, customers shared how much they’ll miss the friendships formed in the store—relationships built over decades of visits, conversations, and shared passion for the hobby.

Although the Rail Yard Hobby Shop is closing, Molinary doesn’t plan on slowing down entirely. He says he’ll continue working in some capacity, even after stepping away from the daily operations of the shop.

For now, the store remains open through the end of the month, and shoppers can take advantage of a 25% discount on all O Gauge trains while supplies last.
