Missing Virginia High School Coach Walked Into Woods With Firearm, Family Attorney Confirms

A new and troubling detail has emerged in the ongoing search for missing Union High School head football coach Travis Turner, as the family’s attorney confirms Turner was last seen walking into a heavily wooded, mountainous area with a firearm.

Turner, 46, has not been seen since November 20 and remains missing as Virginia State Police continue an active search. Authorities say he is now wanted on multiple felony charges and is considered a fugitive.

Last Known Movements Revealed

According to a statement released by attorney Adrian Collins on behalf of the Turner family, Turner left his residence on November 20 and entered nearby woods carrying a firearm. The attorney stated that no arrest warrants had been issued at the time Turner disappeared.

When Turner did not return home that evening, his wife contacted law enforcement. She was advised that a missing-person report could not be filed until at least 24 hours had passed. The official report was filed the following day, prompting search operations by the Virginia State Police.

Family members and friends also conducted limited searches of the surrounding wooded terrain but stopped due to worsening weather conditions and in order not to interfere with official law-enforcement efforts.

In the statement, the family said they are praying Turner is safe and will return to face the allegations in court.

Coach Now Wanted on Child Exploitation Charges

Since Turner’s disappearance, Virginia State Police have obtained ten felony warrants against him:

  • Five counts of possession of child pornography
  • Five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and that additional charges are pending. Turner has not been located and is now considered a fugitive.

“The Virginia State Police is actively searching for Turner, and we are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that may lead to his whereabouts,” a spokesperson said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Virginia State Police Division 4 at 276-484-9483 or email questions@vsp.virginia.gov. Tips may be submitted anonymously.

Background: What Led to the Search

Before the charges were filed, State Police were attempting to locate Turner as part of an investigation and emphasized at the time that officers were not seeking to arrest him. When investigators arrived, Turner was no longer at his home.

Turner was placed on administrative leave with pay by Wise County Public Schools, which stated the move was standard procedure while an external agency reviewed an allegation. The school division said the leave did not represent a determination of wrongdoing.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his disappearance, Union High School’s football team continued its playoff run, winning a game just days later. Students and community members gathered in prayer ahead of kickoff in support of those affected.
