This incident is a little outside our usual coverage area, but when fire and thousands of gallons of milk are involved, it definitely caught our attention.
Emergency crews are on scene of a tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 81 southbound near mile marker 223, causing a full shutdown of all southbound lanes and major traffic delays.

The tractor-trailer was hauling pallets of milk when it caught fire around 12:27 p.m. An estimated 7,000 gallons of milk spilled onto the roadway, prompting a hazardous materials response due to environmental concerns.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze while crews addressed the spill. Large quantities of milk can pose environmental risks if they enter storm drains or waterways.
🚧 Traffic Impact
- All southbound lanes of I-81 are closed
- Traffic is being detoured at mile marker 235
- Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes
There is currently no word on injuries, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
