Cow Rescued From Muddy Pond Area in Bedford County

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. — January 11, 2026

A large animal rescue operation was successfully completed Sunday on Diamond Hill Road after a cow became stuck in deep mud near a pond on a local farm.

According to officials, the cow’s owner initially attempted to free the animal but was unable to safely remove it due to the muddy conditions and the animal’s size. The SOC Task Force was then requested to assist with the rescue.

Specialized large-animal rescue resources responded to the scene and worked together to carefully extract the cow without causing injury. After being freed, the cow was evaluated and was able to stand and walk on its own. Officials confirmed the animal was later observed moving normally in the pasture.

Multiple SOC units were involved in the operation, bringing both manpower and specialized equipment to ensure the rescue was conducted safely and efficiently.

Units operating on scene included:

  • Support 1 & RAV 1
  • Tac 1
  • Rescue 5
  • Rescue 13
  • Support 3 & Large Animal Rescue Trailer
  • Utility 12 & RAV 12

Officials praised the coordinated effort and training involved in the rescue, noting that large animal incidents can be challenging and require specialized techniques to protect both responders and animals.

The successful outcome was welcomed news, with the cow safely back on its feet and no injuries reported.
