Legendary filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday afternoon inside their Los Angeles home, according to law enforcement sources. The deaths have sparked a high-profile homicide investigation now being handled by the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division.
Authorities responded to a medical aid call at the residence around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, where first responders discovered the bodies of the longtime couple. Investigators say both victims suffered laceration injuries consistent with a knife, though officials have not publicly detailed the sequence of events leading up to their deaths.
As the investigation progressed, multiple sources speaking to PEOPLE magazine identified the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, as the person responsible for the killings. Law enforcement officials have not yet released a formal public statement confirming the allegation or announcing charges, and the case remains under active investigation.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about his long battle with drug addiction, including periods of homelessness, though authorities have not indicated whether those struggles played a role in the incident.
Rob Reiner, 78, was a towering figure in American entertainment, with a career that spanned more than five decades. The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, he rose to fame in the 1970s portraying Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards during the show’s run.
Following his success on television, Reiner transitioned into directing and became one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers. His early cult hit This Is Spinal Tap launched a remarkable run that included Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, and The Bucket List. Many of his films remain staples of American cinema.
Reiner met Michele Singer, a photographer, while directing When Harry Met Sally…. The two married in 1989, and their relationship famously influenced the film’s ending, steering it toward the romantic conclusion that became one of the genre’s most memorable moments. They were married for more than 35 years.
In recent years, Reiner continued working both behind and in front of the camera, with acting roles on New Girl and The Bear. According to industry listings, he also completed work on an upcoming Spinal Tap–related project scheduled for release next year.
Reiner was also known for his outspoken political views, frequently sharing commentary on social and political issues later in life.
Rob and Michele Reiner are survived by their children Jake, Nick, and Romy Reiner, as well as Tracy Reiner, Rob’s daughter from his previous marriage to director Penny Marshall. Michele Reiner was 68.
