Roanoke VA Wasena Skatepark Progress Draws Excitement as Project Nears the Finish Line

Roanoke, Va. — January 2026

After years of anticipation, the long-awaited Roanoke VA Skatepark – Wasena Skatepark is finally starting to look like a reality, and new photos showing visible progress are generating renewed excitement across Roanoke.

Recent images reveal significant advancement at Wasena Park, where construction has moved beyond early groundwork and into shaping the skatepark’s layout and features. For many in the community, it’s the clearest sign yet that the project is nearing completion.

The skatepark is part of a broader transformation underway at Wasena Park — one of Roanoke’s most popular outdoor spaces. Already home to ballfields, a playground, river access, and a major stretch of the Greenway, the park is expanding to include new recreation options designed for a wide range of ages and skill levels.

A Project Years in the Making

The skatepark, which carries a total price tag of approximately $1.6 million, is being funded through a mix of city investment, regional contributions from Salem and Vinton, and private donations. The design focuses on street-style elements with flowing lines, beginner-friendly sections, and more technical features for experienced riders.

A pump track is also being built beside the skatepark. The circular track, made up of rollers and banked turns, is designed for skateboards, bicycles, scooters, and roller blades, making it accessible for riders of all ages and abilities.

City officials have previously indicated that both features were shaped heavily by community input, particularly from local skaters who wanted a modern, well-rounded facility.

Community Reaction

Online chatter surrounding the project has been largely positive. Recent posts and comments reflect excitement, curiosity, and relief from residents who have followed the project’s long timeline. Many see the skatepark as a missing piece in Roanoke’s outdoor recreation scene and a space that could become a new hub for youth activity and community connection.

Officials continue to remind the public that the skatepark remains an active construction site and ask people to stay clear until the project officially opens.

Part of a Larger Wasena Vision

The skatepark is just one of several major projects reshaping the Wasena area. Construction is also underway on a multi-phase in-river park along the Roanoke River, intended to improve access for tubing, wading, kayaking, and other water activities.

Meanwhile, the Wasena Bridge replacement continues to move forward and is currently more than halfway complete, with a projected finish in summer 2026.
