ROANOKE, Va. — New information released by the Roanoke Police Department is providing a clearer picture of what led to a fatal shooting Thursday evening in the Windsor Hills area of Roanoke.
Police say officers were dispatched at approximately 5:27 p.m. to the 3500 block of Windsor Road SW after receiving a 911 call reporting a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found an individual suffering from a gunshot wound. Roanoke Fire-EMS pronounced the person dead at the scene.
According to investigators, the shooting appears to have grown out of an altercation that began while the people involved were driving in the area.
Police said the confrontation continued after the vehicles stopped and eventually escalated into the fatal shooting.
The other individual involved in the incident was detained by officers, and a firearm was recovered at the scene.
Detectives later interviewed that individual and consulted with the Roanoke City Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
At this time, police have not announced any criminal charges.
RPD said the investigation remains active. Once it is completed, the evidence and circumstances surrounding the incident will be presented to a future Roanoke City Grand Jury, which will determine whether any charges are appropriate.
The identity of the person killed has not yet been released in the information provided by police.

Community Members Describe Frightening Scene Near Windsor Hills Church
Before police released the preliminary findings, residents and people near the scene began sharing information online as the situation unfolded.
Several community posts placed the police activity near the Windsor Hills church property and the back parking lot area near Mud Lick Road.
Some of those early accounts included information that has not been independently confirmed by police and should be treated as preliminary.
One community account described a vehicle pulling into the area before an altercation took place involving several people. That account claimed a firearm was displayed before a vehicle left the area.
Another person commenting on the incident mentioned seeing or hearing information involving a white van, although its connection to what happened was unclear.
Those details circulated before authorities released their official statement and remain unverified unless later confirmed by investigators.
Children and Staff Reportedly Locked Down Inside Church
Some of the most concerning community feedback came from people connected to a children’s program taking place inside the nearby church.
One person who indicated they were inside the building said everyone in the church was safe and reported that 18 children, five staff members and one parent were placed on lockdown for nearly two hours while police handled the situation outside.
Another parent said children were kept inside and were initially locked down and hiding before officers eventually escorted them from the building through another entrance.
Those accounts help illustrate how broadly the shooting affected people in the immediate area even though police have not indicated that the church, children or staff were targets of the violence.
The reports also line up with photographs from the scene showing a significant police presence, crime-scene tape and privacy screens erected in the parking area.
Early Rumors Spread Before Police Clarified What Happened
As with many breaking incidents, a number of theories and rumors began circulating on social media while police were still processing the scene.
Some commenters speculated about who may have been involved and whether law enforcement played a direct role in the shooting.
There has been no confirmation from Roanoke Police supporting those claims, and the department’s official account instead describes the incident as a confrontation between the involved parties that began while they were driving.
The police statement also clarifies that another individual was detained, interviewed by detectives and released from the immediate investigative process pending further review of the evidence.
The decision to present the case to a future grand jury means prosecutors and investigators will allow jurors to review the circumstances and determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Investigation Continues
The exact sequence of events immediately before the gunfire has not been fully released publicly.
Police have not said what sparked the original roadway altercation, how long the dispute continued, whether either person knew the other beforehand or who initially displayed or fired the recovered weapon.
Those questions could become important as investigators continue reviewing witness statements, physical evidence and any available video.
