Mullet Mania Returns to Franklin County VA Independence Festival — Local Social Media Star “Mudflap” Hoping to Claim the Crown

If you’ve been growing out your legendary locks or simply appreciate one of America’s most iconic hairstyles, it’s time to let your mullet shine.

Franklin County Parks and Recreation has announced that its annual Franklin County Mullet Contest will return Thursday, July 2, at 8 p.m. during the Rocky Mount Rotary Independence Festival, bringing together contestants of all ages for an evening of laughs, competition, and serious hair bragging rights.

The contest will feature youth, teen, and adult divisions, with winners taking home prizes and earning the honor of being crowned this year’s mullet champion.

The overall winner won’t just walk away with a trophy—they’ll hold the championship title until next year’s competition and may even be invited to represent Franklin County at community appearances throughout the year.

Contest organizers encourage anyone sporting the classic “business in the front, party in the back” hairstyle to register ahead of time. Participants can pre-register online through PlayFranklinCounty.com or sign up in person at the Essig Recreation Center before the event.

One Fan Favorite Already Has a Following

One contestant expected to draw plenty of attention this year is local social media personality “Mudflap,” better known to family and friends as Sawyer.

Known for his unmistakable mullet and humorous personality, Mudflap has become something of a local celebrity after appearing in dozens of funny videos across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Several of those videos have gone viral, with some surpassing one million views, earning him fans far beyond Franklin County.

Now, he’s hoping that online support translates into hometown cheers as he enters this year’s mullet competition in search of the championship title.

Friends, family, and followers are expected to be in attendance, making Mudflap one of the contestants many spectators will be watching when the judging begins.

More Than Just a Hair Contest

While the mullet may have started as a hairstyle decades ago, it’s become a cultural phenomenon celebrated across the country with contests, festivals, and competitions dedicated to embracing the fun, nostalgia, and personality that comes with the unforgettable look.

Franklin County’s contest has quickly become one of the more unique attractions during the annual Independence Festival, adding a lighthearted event to an evening already filled with family activities, entertainment, and fireworks.

Whether you’re entering to win, cheering on your favorite contestant, or simply curious to see some incredible hair, organizers say everyone is welcome to enjoy the festivities.
