The Town of Vinton VA has officially renamed Bypass Road to Dogwood Boulevard, marking a symbolic and strategic shift for one of the town’s most important corridors.
The name change was approved by formal resolution of the Town Council on September 2, 2025, and becomes officially effective on February 27, 2026.
A Name Rooted in Identity
For decades, Vinton has proudly carried the title of the Dogwood Capital of Virginia, home to the beloved Vinton Dogwood Festival — a community tradition spanning more than 70 years.
Town leaders say the previous name, “Bypass Road,” lacked character and historical meaning. It described a function — not a place. In contrast, “Dogwood Boulevard” reflects Vinton’s heritage, its visual identity, and its long-term vision.
Mayor Brad Grose emphasized that the corridor is expected to become a key redevelopment and growth area over the next decade, particularly following adoption of the Vinton 2050 Comprehensive Plan.
Renaming the road, he noted, helps reinforce Vinton’s goal of becoming a “go-to” town rather than a “pass-through” town.

Why the Change Matters
The renaming wasn’t rushed. It followed extensive discussion among town staff, landowners, developers, regional planners, and community stakeholders during the comprehensive planning process.
Feedback consistently pointed to three main concerns:
- “Bypass Road” lacked historical or cultural significance
- The name did not reflect Vinton’s community character
- The corridor’s redevelopment potential deserved a stronger brand identity
Dogwood Boulevard now aligns the roadway with Vinton’s broader branding efforts and long-term economic vision.
Implementation Timeline
Although Council approved the resolution in September 2025, implementation was intentionally delayed about six months. This gave businesses along the corridor time to update marketing materials, signage, legal documents, and operational systems.
Here are the key details:
- New Road Signs: “Dogwood Blvd” signage has already been installed.
- Effective Date: February 27, 2026
- Address Updates: The Town coordinated with emergency services, GIS departments, and the United States Postal Service to ensure a smooth transition for mail delivery and navigation systems.
- Walkability & Transit: Plans include new sidewalks along the corridor. The area is already serviced by Valley Metro, supporting multimodal transportation options.
Looking Ahead
Dogwood Boulevard isn’t just a new name on a sign — it signals a broader shift in how Vinton sees its future.
With redevelopment opportunities, improved walkability, transit access, and long-range planning under the Vinton 2050 framework, this corridor is positioned to play a central role in the town’s next chapter.
The Town expressed appreciation to residents and stakeholders who provided input throughout the process.
