ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. — A new policy taking effect July 1 will allow visitors to bring cellphones and other electronic devices into the Roanoke County Courthouse Complex, marking a change from previous courthouse rules.
According to information released by the courthouse, visitors will now be permitted to carry electronic devices into the complex. However, officials emphasize that the new policy comes with several important restrictions designed to maintain courtroom safety, security, and decorum.
Under the updated policy:
📱 Electronic devices are now permitted inside the Roanoke County Courthouse Complex.
⚖️ Court-specific rules still apply. Visitors should follow any posted or announced rules for the courtroom they are entering, as policies may vary depending on the court.
🔇 Devices should remain on silent and be used appropriately at all times while inside the courthouse.
📷 Recording may still be prohibited. Audio recording, video recording, and photography may not be allowed in certain courtrooms or proceedings.
🤝 Respect the courtroom. Officials ask all visitors to help maintain a safe, respectful, and professional environment while conducting courthouse business.
The courthouse’s message accompanying the policy highlights three guiding principles for visitors: Connect. Respect. Focus.
Officials encourage anyone visiting the courthouse after July 1 to familiarize themselves with any courtroom-specific requirements before entering, as judges may continue to enforce individual rules regarding electronic device use.
What do you think of the change? Do you believe allowing cellphones into the courthouse is a positive update for visitors, or should restrictions remain more stringent? Share your thoughts in the comments.
