Mary Marie Everson Sentenced To 70 Years In Franklin County, VA Child Murder Case

A Franklin County courtroom handed down a lengthy prison sentence this week in one of the more disturbing child abuse cases the Rocky Mount area has seen in recent years.

Mary Marie Everson was sentenced Monday to 70 years in prison, with 37 years suspended, after previously pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her 8-year-old stepson. That leaves her with an active prison sentence of 33 years.

The case dates back to February 8, 2025, when emergency crews responded to a home in the 100 block of Circle View Street in Rocky Mount for reports of an unconscious child. Tragically, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to prosecutors, the medical examiner determined the child’s injuries were consistent with battered child syndrome. Authorities said the injuries varied in age and severity, pointing to repeated abuse over time.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Dennis reportedly told the court the number, location, and different stages of the injuries played a major role in the findings.

The child’s biological father, Michael Everson, also faced charges connected to the case. He previously entered a plea to child abuse resulting in serious injury and received a 10-year prison sentence, with a large portion of that time suspended.

Cases involving children tend to hit communities especially hard, and this one has sparked strong reactions across Franklin County and beyond. Many people online have questioned whether the sentence was enough, while others say no amount of prison time can undo what happened to the child.

No matter where people stand on sentencing, it’s another heartbreaking reminder of the importance of speaking up when signs of abuse are suspected.
